I scared the hell out of my undergrads by assigning the article linked below for them to read. The idea that they couldn’t possibly be entitled to their own opinions was such an anathema to them that it really shocked them. When I followed up that they were required to argue for the things they wanted to claim, their first instinct was to just yell louder, as though volume was a substitute for logic, reason, or evidence. I finally got through to a few of them, but several others remained stubbornly self-absorbed and insistent that just because they could think, they were somehow entitled to hold that viewpoint in face of whatever evidence was dropped in their laps like an anvil.
